On April 6, 1917, the United States formally entered World War I. Joseph Herrington (left) was one of many young men from Bienville Parish who joined in the fight. On December 31, 1917, he died from pneumonia at Camp Beauregard, near Alexandria. About a third of all deaths in the war resulted from diseases. The soldier at right is unidentified. From 1914 until 1917, Pres. Woodrow Wilson attempted to keep America out of World War I. When Germany instituted a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare and sought to build an alliance with Mexico against the United States, Wilson was forced to enter the conflict.
